Tango nedir? Tehlikeli yakınlaşmaların ve inatçı karşılaşmaların dans, müzik ve şarkı sözleri eşliğindeki tarihidir. Öfkeli ve kavgacıdır. Ama aynı zamanda bir felsefe, bir strateji, duyguların emperyalist dolaşımında egzotik ve tutkulu bir meta, hatta bir hastalıktır.

Bu kitap, tangonun Buenos Aires'in genelevlerinden Paris'in kabarelerine, oradan Tokyo'nun kulüplerine uzanan yolculuğunu izlerken aynı zamanda tangonun politik karakterine bakıyor. Yol boyunca maçoluk ve kolonyalizm, postmodernizm ve ataerkillik, egzotizm ve metalaştırma arasındaki ilişkileri çözümlüyor. Egzotik olanın sadece emperyal Batı'nın zevk nesnesi değil, aynı zamanda kolonileştirilmiş ambalajında satılan ''tutku paketi''ne dönüştüğünü gösteriyor.

Yazar, birbirinin içine girmiş cinsellik, toplumsal cinsiyet, ırk, sınıf ve ulusal kimlik öykülerini anlatmak için kendi ''tango dilini'', ''kişisel ve politik'' sesini yaratıyor. Aynı anda hem tangonun ezgotikleştirilmesine hem bir Üçüncü Dünya kadın entelektüeli olarak kendi yazgısına bakıyor, hem de okurun önünde tango yapıyor: ''Tango benim rahmim, dilim, 'evrenselciliğin' kolonyal davetlerine karşı durabileceğim, sığınabileceğim bir siper.'' Üstelik bunu yaparken, Latin Amerika'nın direnişçi tarihinden, özellikle de Che'den ilham alıyor: ''Che gibi ben de, amacımın galibiyet olduğunu açıkça söylüyorum. Kendi örneğimde, bunu bozguncu ezgilerin tangosunu yaparak ve akademik sessizliklerin ritmini kırarak gerçekleştiriyorum'' diyor. Sonunda ''öğrendiklerini terk eden, unutan'' bir entelektüel olarak dekolonileştirici bir söyleme ulaşıyor.

Savigliano bir kadın, bir feminist ve bir tango dansçısı olarak tangonun insanları hem cezbeden hem de rahatsız eden yönlerini cesurca ortaya koyuyor. Onun anlattığı biçimiyle tango tarihi, kolonileştirilmiş bir ülkenin tarihi olmanın yanı sıra ''öteki'' olarak tanımlanmış kadınların da tarihi.

5) EVARISTO CARRIEGO - ORGE LUIS BORGES

Genç yaşta ölen Arjantinli bir şairin dokunaklı hikayesini anlatan Evaristo Carriego, 20. yüzyıl başlarındaki Buenos Aires'in ruhunu yansıtır. Jorge Luis Borges, 1930'da Evaristo Carriego'yu yayımladığında kenar mahallelerden gelen bir şairin hayatını ve çalışmalarını yazdığı için eleştirilmişti. Ancak Borges, Carriego'nun şiirlerinde Arjantin'in ruhunu bulduğunu ve bu kitabı doğup büyüdüğü Buenos Aires'i anlatmak için yazdığını söyleyecekti.

Yazar bu kitabı içinden gelen bir gereklilik duygusuyla hem şaire hem de kendi çocukluğuna karşı bir borç öder gibi yazmıştır. Bu bakımdan oldukça kişisel bir kitaptır ve çok güçlü duygular taşır. Argentine Queer Tango: Dance and Sexuality Politics in Buenos Aires investigates changes in tango dancing in Buenos Aires during the first decade of the twenty-first century and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural transformations.
