Ricardo TANTURI |

Just last week, I noticed this
announcement for a MILONGA at a NEW YORK based, reputable tango
club: "TANTURI night (and others)". And by coincidence (?)
last night I happened to have BEVERLY and JEFFREY from that same New
York over here in Istanbul. At one of the milonga's, BEVERLY suddenly happily cheered "TANTURI" and took me to the dance floor. We had noticed before that TANTURI plays nice danceable tango, and precise for that reason he apparantly got hype for the moment in the BIG APPLE. The nice and easy "dance qualities" of the Ricardo TANTURI Orchestra however were one of the reasons why a some of the tango "die hards" liked to denigrate its' qualities back in the early days. TANTURI liked to keep long lasting relationships with his singers and his wonderful choice for unique voices ended up with fame. Two names stand out in Tango History : The great Alberto
CASTILLO - who was a class at his own - certainly got that
extra edge when backed up by TANTURI (before going solo). He
was followed by Enrique CAMPOS, who (just like
CASTILLO) did not impose on the public but let the song itself do
the work. CAMPOS is more loved by the milongueros for dancing.
CASTILLO does give a little bit more of drama. Paul WOUTERS |
