One evening approx. 22.00 Hrs, on the way from TANGO JEAN CLUB & ATÖLYE (Irfan Yüksel) - (where they have performed 10 February 2007 – see www.istanbultango.com) - to a weekly milonga in another part of Istanbul. Marina and Giggio are the invited special guests there for tonight and they will give a little demonstration. Though still young (Giggio is 25 years and Marina is 22 years old), the dance partners appear to be open and outgoing people. With a “playfull seriousness” that surprizes in a very positive way, they interest and interact “joyfully but to the point” with their surroundings and the people they meet. It are clearly dancers that live for the dance and the tango, but with an interest that reaches still deeper and with unprejudiced openness to the world. Their balance also reflects on me and we have a short, informal talk. For the readers information: their tango is technically well developped and feels "very nuevo". Their classes breath the same atmosphere. When did you start dancing ? Giggio: I started dancing eleven years ago when I was fourteen in Sao Paulo (Brazil). Norberto “Pulpo” Esbrez (“the king of gancho’s - www.PulposTango.com.ar - www.pulpostangoweek.com.ar) is my first teacher and he is one of the students from the first generation of Carlos Dienzel’ “TANGO ARGENTINO”. Marina : I started to dance when I was sixteen, also in Sao Paulo. I first started with Latin dances at first and two years after tango. Which teachers have left the biggest impression on you? Do you have anyone as examples in the tango world? Specific people who you admire ? Giggio: Of course Norberto “Pulpo” Esbrez at first. And there are other figures left impressions on me, not as teachers, but rather as dancers. Like ,Gustavo Naveira, Mariano “Chicho”Frumboli and Sebastian Arce. Marina : As teachers, first Jaime Aroxa and Bianca Gonzales, Ronaldo Bolano and Giggio Giovanni. As performers Eugenia Parrilla , Lucia Mazer and Mariana Montes. Who is your favorite tango music composer – what is your favorite song? Giggio: It’s the most difficult question. I love and appreciate several kinds of composers from various times. As traditional tango composers, there are amongst others Carlos Di Sarli Orchestra, Alberto Podesta Singing and new Piazzolla’s Four Seasons. Marina : I am so unconstant and I falll in love with a different song every day, mostly tango. Is there any special achievement you would like to reach in your career ? Tango school – event – movie – book – whatever? Giggio: All of them sound great, but I dream about an atmosphere where those can be seen as more than dreams. I want a community where those things can be achieved by common people. Marina : I want to be in that community. Name two cities – outside of Buenos Aires – that surprised you (for tango or other reasons) and two cities / festivals where you will go later this year. Giggio & Marina: The first we would say is, just coming from Berlin, that Berlin and Istanbul are two cities that surprized us for a lot of reasons besides tango of course. The difference between in Istanbul and Berlin is this I think, in Berlin everything was on schedule J but nothing unusual happened L. In Istanbul on the other hand, everything is unusual. We can’t get bored. The culture and the prople are totally different. We are going to the Berlin festival at the end of May and we are going to the Festival Of La Plata in September. Istanbul has been very kind to us ... we really hope to see you all back soon ...
